04 May Creatives Need Thick Skin Postcard #10
One of the most important things I have learned about being a creative person and being in any type of creative field is that you really have to develop a thick skin.
You put everything into a piece of art or design and then have to completely remove yourself during a critique. If you can’t, you’ll lose a little bit of yourself every time you share your work and feel a little worse about your skills instead of learning how to improve them from what you have been told.
So this card is dedicated to everyone out there who is in a creative field where everyone becomes a critic ad has something to say about your work. You create new things and ideas every day and that is hard work.
This is also dedicated to the classmates who are learning and thickening their skin along side me in the Graphic Design program who will recognize many of the expressions in this postcard. Although not all of them were directly aimed at my work, I can still imagine what it would be like if they were.
My designs might not always be amazing but I am always learning and I plan to never stop that part of my design process.
This postcard’s illustration was done by hand. I am still learning to refine my sketching but love cartoon styles so I like how this one turned out. I kept refining and retracing it but in the end the last inked version looked too perfect so I went back to the third or fourth version to scan. I then took it into Photoshop to add a touch of colour. The earlier version still had some imperfections and typography weirdness. I liked the more organic and raw feeling of it which fits with the artistic and creative nature of my message.
